Dogs can recognize a bad person and there’s a science to prove it

Dogs can recognize a bad person and there’s a science to prove it

From the stranger that your normally well-behaved dog barks at in the street to the friend that your dog refuses to go near, sometimes it seems dogs just know when someone is a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ person.

And now it turns out our suspicions were right all along.

Your dog might actually be smarter than you’re giving it credit for. It turns out, that dogs are pretty good at picking up on human behavior. When a dog sense that a person may be someone to avoid, science says that their instincts are spot on.

We all know that dogs have an incredible sense of smell. That’s why they’re sometimes used to sniff out drugs or bombs or to protect our first responders.  But a dog can actually recognize factors that make up a person’s personality, according to a study published in the journal Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews. Specifically, they can sense when a person is being “mean” to another person.

Dogs are highly skilled at understanding human pointing gestures, but they also make inferences about the reliability of a human who presents cues and consequently modifies their behavior flexibly depending on the inference.

Basically, dogs aren’t willing to ride with someone who won’t be willing to ride with their best friends.

Filipino boy shielded mother cat from raging typhoon as it gave birth

A boy shielded mother cat from raging typhoon as it gave birth

Faith in humanity is restored in every act of kindness toward animals – this is why this article has been circulating/trending since 2015. Journalist Linus Escandor had the opportunity to capture the touching scene, shot in the middle of heavy rain as typhoon Egay roared through our country in 2015.

The boy, whose identity is still unknown, seemed genuinely concerned for the cat.  He shielded a stray cat against the heavy rain with a large plastic sheet while she gave birth.  The mother cat gave birth to 4 beautiful kittens and a local animal welfare group has since rescued the cats.

Let us keep our faith and our hopes that the voiceless and the homeless animals will always find someone with a kind and loving heart…

Why does my cat love to watch TV?

Why does my cat love to watch TV?

Can cats see and understand what they’re watching on the screen? Do they watch TV and think, “Wow, what a great show?

Not really – like humans, cats use vision and hearing to engage with TV, but cats are also drawn to electronic screens because some videos appeal to a cat’s innate hunting instincts.

Cats are curious creatures that are highly responsive to visual cues and interesting sounds. They require mental stimulation, which is what television provides cats. Some cats love watching TV. Their brains process images much faster than ours, so they see television screens as a flicker, piquing their interest

There are several possible reasons why some cats are more devoted screen watchers than others. For one screen-watching cat may have a higher prey drive and are more likely to be attracted to the quick movements of objects across the screen. Some studies have indicated that cats are able to identify imagery on TV, as we know that they can distinguish between outlines, patterns, and textures.

As explained in the Merck Veterinary Manual, a cat’s cone cells give them “excellent visual acuity and binocular vision,” and give them the ability to see different colors. Because they have fewer cones than humans, cats can’t see a full spectrum of color, but kitties can see red, green, and blue. However, cats have more rods than humans, which is why they have much sharper vision than humans in dim light — up to six times better than their pet parents, says Merck.

Because of the structure of their eyes, cats are more likely to engage in television that contains a combination of red, green, and blue paired with swiftly moving objects.

So, there’s really nothing to worry about, and the fascinating facts behind why your cat loves to watch TV are so perfect for you to snuggle up together for some downtime.

Vaccination for Animal Health

Vaccination for Animal Health

Vaccination has long been an effective way to reduce the disease burden in pets and farm animals and is a key tool in maintaining animal welfare and health. Vaccines continue to play an increasingly vital role in preventative health and disease control programs in animals.

All those who care for animals, including pet owners and farmers, have a duty to protect animal welfare and health under their care.  However, animals, like people, are susceptible to a wide range of diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Vaccines are available for many of these diseases, making them preventable or mitigating the losses or long-term consequences of the disease. This is particularly important for those diseases which have complex, limited, or no treatment options available. Therefore, we should prioritize preventing disease or minimizing the clinical signs of disease in the first instance to protect animal welfare and health: the old adage of ‘prevention is better than cure”.

Another important concept in vaccination is herd immunity. Herd immunity is the protection offered to a wider community of animals, pets, or farm animals, when a sufficiently high proportion of individual animals are vaccinated, reducing the prevalence of disease and numbers of susceptible individuals in an area.

Key Concepts: Vaccines and Vaccination

Vaccines have a long and successful history of preventing and controlling disease. The veterinary vaccines available today represent years of innovative research and meet many of the disease threats faced by pets and animals.

Vaccines work by stimulating an immune response in an animal without causing the disease itself. When healthy animals are vaccinated, their own immune system responds to the vaccine and can remember the infectious agent to which the animal is vaccinated. This means, if appropriately vaccinated animals are then exposed to the pathogen against which they have been vaccinated, they can expect a level of protection from disease.

The main types of vaccines available can be categorised as modified-live (attenuated), inactivated and recombinant.

Feline Vaccination

Many of the most important diseases in cats can be prevented, controlled or alleviated through effective vaccination.
These include:
Feline Panleukopenia/Infectious Enteritis (Feline Panleukopenia or Parvovirus, FPV)
Feline Rhinotracheitis (Feline Herpesvirus, FHV)
Feline Calicivirus (FCV)
Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV)
Chlamydophila felis
Feline Rabies

Canine Vaccination

The important canine diseases, for which vaccines are available, include:

Feline Panleukopenia/Infectious Enteritis (Feline Panleukopenia or Parvovirus, FPV)
Feline Rhinotracheitis (Feline Herpesvirus, FHV)
Feline Calicivirus (FCV)
Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV)
Chlamydophila felis
Feline Rabies

A Pet Dog Saving A Boy From Falling Into a Pond

A Pet Dog Saving A Boy From Falling Into a Pond

A video is going viral on social media that shows a pet dog saving a boy from falling into a pond. While playing, their ball accidentally lands in a fish pond.

While the girl seeks for an adult to help them, the boy goes to the pond and bends over to get the ball. Acting on instinct and sensing that the boy could fall into the pond, the dog grabs the boy’s T-shirt with his teeth and pulls him back. Then surprisingly grabs a net to take the ball out of the water, then gave the ball. The boy acknowledged this and pets the dog on his head. The video has received over 16,700 views.

Dogs have a natural instinct to protect their home and family and they make excellent guard dogs.

They can do things for you and you’ll be surprised by how smart and protective they are!

They are the most protective and faithful pets. They are especially protective of children from their human families. You’ll often see them showing their loyalty sometimes.

ANGKOP with Secaspi Animal Shelter for a Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination

ANGKOP with Secaspi Animal Shelter for a Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination

Yesterday, March 30, our President, Doc Joseph de Guzman personally assisted ANGKOP with Secaspi Animal Shelter for a Free Anti-Rabies Vaccination.
We headed to Canlabung, Laguna for this mission. It took more than 1.5 hours to reach the location. We laughed at the experience now, but yesterday we were unsure if we’ll be able to get there on time. Just imagine an off-road experience but you don’t know which way to go. You can say, we lost our way to the clinic and were fortunate to avoid an accident when we reached a cliff.
Having a positive attitude helps to have to go through challenges or risks like this and all the hassle was taken away upon seeing the animals for vaccination and the opportunity of working with the commendable teamwork and hospitality of Secaspi Animal Shelter and their neighborhood. Everybody’s warm, courteous, and helpful.
As always, we are happy to collaborate with animal clinics, animal welfare groups/advocates in driving responsible pet ownership and pushing for a rabies-free community.
We aim to educate, end rabies to save the lives of animals and humans. Rabies vaccination is an effective way to prevent rabies-related problems. And our team, together with individuals/organizations reaching out to us are always ready to combat rabies related-problems.
Remember – Rabies is an incurable virus that attacks the brain and spinal cord. While it’s preventable and even treatable if caught early on, once the symptoms of rabies appear, the virus is fatal.
Thank you to Secaspi Animal Shelter for this collaboration. We look forward to working with your team again!

First Veterinary School in Ilocos Norte to Open this Year

First Veterinary School in Ilocos Norte to Open this Year

The demand for veterinarians is expected to grow due to rising incomes and the increase in the number of people opted to own pets as companions and there are also a lot of pet owners who are a willing to pay for more elective and intensive care than in the past.

Many young people too are interested in pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine as they have been actively participating to animal welfare activities, thus, the passion and desire to take care of the animals develop.

MMSU President Shirley Agrupis stated in the interview, “This is in response to the country’s need for veterinarians due to emerging and re-emerging animal diseases, and to the very small number of licensed veterinarians in the province.”

The Risks in Every Mission

The Risks in Every Mission

We’re sharing some behind-the-scenes moments we talked about after the event.  The excitement, fear, madness, tiredness, and laughter, all these mixed emotions, we normally had, after a mission!

We cheer, we celebrate after accomplishing a project as we know that our team was able to, if not save, make an animal happier and healthier.  We can only do so much and we are deeply grateful for all the support and love we receive from everyone who supports us for the advocacy that we are fighting for.

But, behind the victory are risks and challenges we take, bravely and whole-heartedly.  Words are not enough to express our gratitude to every member/volunteer of our team.  Their passion and dedication are immeasurable.  Possible injuries and medical emergencies that may happen despite taking proper procedures or precautions during the process. Veterinarians, trained members and volunteers with direct contact with an animal are at risk for exposure to hazards such as bite, scratch, kick, crush injuries, and get soiled with pee, stools, saliva, or vomit all at the same from an animal exhibiting anxiety, fear, or excitement.  May encounter physical injuries, zoonotic, and allergic hazards but everyone’s just doing an excellent job handling these cases properly and professionally.

These are a few challenges our team encounters during missions and that is also the reason why we have members and workers who received proper training in animal restraint, handling, and care.

NOTE:  Health and safety precautions are strictly observed.  Risk assessment and controls are always put in place and plans for “worst case” scenarios and emergencies are prepared.  We diligently have equipped workers assigned to tasks involving direct animal handling and care.

Binangonan, Rizal – 5 People Were Arrested for violating RA 8485 and RA 9268

Binangonan, Rizal – 5 People Were Arrested for violating RA 8485 and RA 9268

Veterinarians protect people, animals, and society, in return, let us defend their profession!

Veterinarians play a major role in the health of our society by caring for animals and by using their expertise and education to protect and improve human health as well.

  • They are the first and best line of defense against animal diseases that could threaten public health and our national security.
  • They protect the health and welfare of livestock and oversee meatpacking plants to ensure all meat is safe for human consumption.
  • Veterinarians are crucial to the development of new drugs for both people and animals. As researchers, veterinarians are finding new ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent health disorders in all species.

Remember RA 8485 (Animal Welfare Act of 1998 as amended by RA 10631) and RA 9268 (Vet Med Act) if ever you encounter any activities violating these rules.
